CORRUPTION :
Corruption refers to the act of misuse and abuse of power especially by those in the government for personal gains.
It promotes inequality, unethicality, inequity, injustice, inefficiency and inconsistency in administrative conduct and behavior .
Local people must be made aware about their rights and sense of duty towards ensuring good governance must be the way forward as recommended by the 2nd ARC report.
Corruption is a worldwide phenomenon. But everyone admits that corruption is something ugly. Unfortunately in our country, corruption has become a part of life. It has entered the very roots of the Indian society.corruption nepotism and dishonesty have tarnished every fabric of our social life.
* our ministers are corrupt; our officers are corrupt; every politician without exception is corrupt.
Government is focusing more on digitizing which lead to more transparency in functioning of government. Another potent check on corruption is Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) .It was setup by the government to advise and guide central agencies in the areas of Vigilance.
OBJECTIVES OF THE ACT:
TO empower the citizens
To promote transparency and accountability. To contain corruption and to enhance people's participation in democratic process.
legal steps to prevent corruption :
1.Anti-corruption laws in India :
* INDIAN PENAL CODE, 1860.
prosecution section of income tax Act, 1861.
* The benami transaction (prohibition) Act, 1988 to prohibit benami transactions.
* Prevention of money laundering Act 2002.
2.Benami property Act 1988;
Recent amendments have widened the definition of the benami property and allow the government to confiscate such properties without any hassles of court approvals.
3.prevention of corruption Act 1988 :
* seeks to create a balance between the need to bring the corruption and protect honest officers. It main thrust is to prohibits public servants from accepting illegal gratification .
4. Right To Information (RTI) Act 2005:
section -2(j) "RIGHT TO INFORMATION " means the right to information accessible under this act which is held by or under the control of any public authority and includes the right to :
*Inspection of work, documents, records taking notes, certified copies of documents or records. Obtaining information in the form of diskettes floppies, tapes cassettes other electronic mode where such information is stored in a computer or in any other device
Section -4:- of the RTI Act requires suo moto disclosure of information by each public authority.
5.Central Vigilance commission Act 2003:
* Gives statutory status to CVC shall be appointed by president on recommendation of a committees to choose chairperson for CIC,LOKPAL ,CBI director and CVC.

CAUSES OF CORRUPTION IN INDIA :
* Lack of accountability .
* Lack of transparency in deals and affairs .
* Lack of fundamental rights awareness in people in India .
* use of black money in elections .
Social and ethical :
Social discrimination -the poor and marginalized due to their lack of awareness and high dependence on the state become the easy target of exploitation by corrupt officials .
*failure of education system - The Value of education has failed miserably in India to inculcate the value of empathy, compassion, integrity, equity etc... in the young generation.
E-governance initiates advancing the good governance objectives of accountability and transparency also seeks to reduce the manual interaction between state and citizen thus preventing the incidences of bribery.
*Bringing transparency of the rules act as recommended by economic survey to increase transparency and awareness.
* Giving citizen charter and social audits a legal force and creating at all levels to ensure their enforcement.

Corruption affects each and every one of our lives in some cases, it might even cost of lives. It endangers our everyday being. It destroys country's economy.It reduces the citizens personal wealth, thus renewal of the political system, thus removing citizens trust in their own nation .
